Surface Research

this class was very literal which was surprising considering that after going to the other classes i wasn't really sure to expect based on the class titles alone. taking all three of the studio classes surprisingly didn't allow the specialization of this studio class to bleed over with the other studio classes. if you were intending on going into a painting related concentration then this class was definitely for you. we used mediums that allowed us build up on flat surfaces which was new to me. we experimented with acetate which i found fun because you could layer the hell out of your idea. we played around with concepts of line, shape, and form.

again if you had intended on going into painting and printmaking this class could have easily taken the cake for you but being that i am not, this class fell in a gray area for me. interesting but not quite enough. our teacher was probably the only thing that kept me from really not liking this class. i liked the fact that we got to be really loose/experimental with the projects that we were taking on. a friend of mine, who is also interested in graphics, became very fascinated with painting which i feel like is a good thing for afo. everyone has had a completely different high school or college art experience some of which didn't involve certain mediums so the fact that afo lets you at least get your feet wet in the majority of them is A+

Space Research

space is basically a sculpture driven studio class. physically putting something together is still one of my favorite things to do so this was also a class that i enjoyed. being in afo last semester i feel like the newer curriculum of specialized studio classes is a lot better. i feel like most people maybe thought they knew a subject like sculpture but now they have gotten the hands on with it and may even be reconsidering applying to that field(including myself).
we spent way more time this semester constructing things out of different materials. although a lot of the time you were confined to that particular material it forced you to learn limitations of what exactly it may or may not do. trying to make a free standing object out a everyday plastic grocery bag is quite a task. even making people use the wood shop more i feel like broaden their perspective. last year it felt like wood shop was optional type of thing that if you felt comfortable doing it was there but this year forced you into it. all the wood shop people were very helpful and didn't criticize/redirect you in a completely different way. sidenote: i just got a free red bull! our professor was very knowledgeable about all the materials we used which helped out. i know that a lot of the teachers here are strong suited in particular mediums and this semester i feel like they are matched up with what they should be teaching. A+

Time Studio

time addresses more of the digital aspect of art. one of our first projects actually involved constructing flip books that had a subject of our choice. then we dipped in the digital aspect and dabbled with photo sequences/ flash/imovie/blogs with a little break in between for a performance art piece.

this class was very informational and i feel like i am taking a lot away from it. i knew nothing about flash or imovie and now i feel like i know enough to use them in the future to express/convey an idea or feeling. time also strengthened my reasoning behind wanting to be a graphic design major. i did meet a life long buddy named James. hahaha. our professor was really nice and allowed us to be us. i think that this is very important in art school. we might have this grand idea that would be overwhelming but she still encouraged us to plug along on it and offer helpful ideas/hints.
